Four years ago, I was just an ordinary teenager living an ordinary life. Until someone hid a secret in my mind without my knowledge. And the people who weren’t supposed to, found out…

Today, I am the best assassin the supernatural world has ever seen.

In a world where people turn into animals at will and others levitate things with their minds, it sucks to not have any magic in your veins. But I didn’t need magic to be a fighter. I didn’t need to float shit on air to learn how to use a dagger. I did the best I could with what I had, and I’m damn good at it, too.

When I finally made it inside the lair of the Red Rebels themselves—supernaturals I fought against every single day—the white lies that knitted my reality for so long began to untie.

My whole world is about to fall apart all over again, and I’m as ready for it as I was the first time…

Assassin Starlight Book 1 eBook DN Hoxa

This a what I consider a "hard" fantasy, in that the plot and the action is all deadly serious. (If you are looking for a comic fantasy, this isn’t it). It has a tough, gritty heroine who has been betrayed on all sides by those she trusted. Much of the back story is told in flashbacks, which ordinarily I am not a fan of, but they are handled very well here. The story ends with a satisfying conclusion, but leaves a lot of unanswered questions, which I assume will be answered by the other books in the series. I don't mind this if the author doesn't drag the mystery out for too long. in my opinion, stringing readers along and dribbling out tidbits of information about an important sub-plot for more than a trilogy or at the most four books is not playing fair with the reader. Then it becomes about selling books not good storytelling.
At any rate, I am curious enough to give the other two books a try. Four Stars.

Assassin Starlight Book 1 eBook DN Hoxa Reviews

good read keept me turning pages
Suddenly the assassin character is intimidated by people? Why. The character does follow a coherent logic chain. Hard to care about a character that leaves you bored.
So I just finished this book and I have to say this is not the type I would normally buy. I read the description on and it was on sale for $0.99. The description had me intrigued so I spent the little bit of change. After reading the book and getting hooked on the main character (Star), I'm will be purchasing book two to follow through with this series. If anyone is into these types of books and is looking for something new to read I highly recommend this author.
The writing was pretty good, the story line a bit confusing. My biggest complaint was the heroine. The most arrogant, snobbish know it all. Loves to kill and brags about it. Not interested enough to read future books in this series.
Assassin is an amazing start to a new paranormal series. I’ve read several of D.N. Hoxa’s books, and the thing I like best about them is there’s always a strong female character. Not that the characters don’t have some vulnerabilities—they’re human after all—but they’re also fighters, both literally and figuratively.

Star—aka “The Raven—is the appropriately named star of Assassin. Star is an assassin for a mysterious group made up of people with paranormal powers. The group is in a battle with another paranormal group called the Red Rebels. Star has been trained to be the ultimate fighter and killer, but she herself doesn’t have paranormal powers.

Or does she?

I’m not going to give any spoilers, but will only say, things are not always what they seem. And it’s a lot of fun reading this story and learning what the truth really is. I can’t wait for the rest of this series.
Assassin shows a broad depth of emotion regarding the struggles the heroine goes through as she tries to understand what she is and how she will ever come to feel that she belongs anywhere. Poignant, you will feel as the heroine does and that means the author is so talented that they bring the characters to life.
I am a voracious reader. This book is bad. Very poor writing! It was as if a teenager wrote this novel. No depth to the characters at all. Aaron, the male lead is weak and "giggles" like a school girl. The female lead, star, comes off as childish and boastful. If I read about her "evil smile" and that she is the "best assassin in the world" one more time I will scream. The fight scenes are horrendous. I was very disappointed in this book. From the other reviews I took a chance on this series and bought all 3 books. Big mistake on my part. I will not even bother to read the other two books...that is how bad they are. Please save your money or at least if you are going to try it don't purchase all three at once!
