Those whom God wishes to destroy he first makes mad...

The convent of Our Lady of Mercy stands alone in an uninhabited part of the Spanish sierra. Its inhabitants are devoted to God, to solitude and silence; six women cut off from the world they've chosen to leave behind.

Everything changes on the day that a suitcase punctured with air-holes is discovered on the convent steps. Soon Mother Superior Maria Ines finds that the box and its contents are to have consequences beyond her imagining, and that even in her carefully protected sanctuary she is unable to keep the world, or her past, at bay.

The Convent edition by Panos Karnezis Literature Fiction eBooks

A newborn baby is found at the isolated convent of Our Lady of Mercy. The convent is surrounded by dense forests, and the sisters can't imagine how the child got there. Mother Superior believes the infant is an answer to a long-time prayer, an implement of redemption for a very old and serious sin. Neglecting the conventions of the order, she adopts him as her own, private miracle, instead of relinquishing him to the orphanage. This causes many problems in the daily life of the convent.

This interesting mystery reminds us that we are all human beings, no matter how intense our efforts to achieve spiritual heights. It also demonstrates how human mistakes can be handled in either constructive or destructive ways.

Although this mystery is somewhat predictable, it remains an interesting one. The settings are well developed, but, sadly, the characters seem flat and empty. Still, this little book is worth reading.

The Convent edition by Panos Karnezis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A remote convent in the Spanish sierras in the early 20th century is the scene of a spiritual reckoning. When a newborn infant is discovered at the 16th century convent of Our Lady of Mercy, Mother Superior Sister Maria Inez knows at once that God has answered her lifelong prayer, the baby boy a "miracle", a divine gift. There are only six nuns remaining in this once-thriving holy enterprise, women who devote the hours of the day to prayer and work, isolated in a decaying convent surrounded by a dense forest. Save the secret gramophone one sister plays in her room, the sound muffled by a stocking, and the loving ministrations of the elderly Sister Carlota to stray dogs, the brides of Christ are reasonably content. The arrival of the child changes the delicate balance of a world designed to eliminate conflict, to honor the contemplative life. What might have been simply resolved becomes a charged conflict, emotions flaring when Sister Maria Inez declares she will keep the child and care for him.

Karnezis pokes beneath the placid layers of prayer and obedience to the deeper shoals of guilt, remorse and God's judgment. What Sister Maria Inez sees as her personal miracle, Sister Ana knows for the Devil's work, as convinced in her outrageous interpretation as Sister Maria Inez. Even the occasional visit by Bishop Estrada has not tempered the willfulness of a Mother Superior who consecrates the host in the absence of a priest, tacks a picture of her long lost beloved among her holy images and becomes obsessed with protecting her "miracle" from harm. Unsettled by the shining eyes and fierce devotion of the nuns on his monthly visit, Bishop Estrada is unaware of the storm brewing.

Embraced by the sheltering walls of Our Lady of Mercy, entry here eradicates each sister's history, a new name celebrating the spiritual path. Actions, burdens, guilt, lie dormant in the exercise of humility and service. Order prevails until the serpent arrives in the Garden of Eden in the guise of an innocent baby boy, unleashing the demons of fanaticism, fear and ambition, a child become the battlefield on which a tragic war is waged. Guilt is a heavy burden for the servants of God, mercy a scarce palliative, a drop of water on a scorched soul. Indeed, the shapeless habit of a nun gives form to her vocation, the sins of the flesh muffled by prayer. Yet the mind is cunning, fanaticism a sly conceit, aberrant child of pride and humility. It is here the true battle is joined "I am human and nothing that is human is alien to me (Terence)." Luan Gaines/2010.
A sad, rundown convent in Italy is the setting. The story is familiar in that most of the nuns have issues power struggles, imaginations running wild, and a pregnancy by a Bishop. The over-riding symbolism is the nesting storks that live in the chimneys of the convent.
At first I was drawn into the mystery of the story. Many parts were presented but all were foregone conclusions.
The theology is flawed greatly. The sins of fornication are quite clear. The abortion the superior had at nineteen and her boy friend paid for brought her agony her whole life, her sin not confessed for over fifty years. The 'saying' of mass and believing she could actually consecrate the bread and wine. Sister Beatrix seduced by the bishop, having his baby, and her own lack of virtue and restraint, and the bishop's appalling lack of dignity. It is wrong that authors take this tactic and want to bring sex, lying, deceit, suicide, anger, lack of morals etc. into a story with religious undertones.
The idea that religious life is remotely like this is wrong. The True Catholic Church is not like this.
Read a wonderful story also on DVD about Teresa of the Andes. Beautifully written and full of customs and a great story based on truth and her real life! This story 'Convent' by Panos K.was a waste of time and money.
I had to limit myself to only one chapter a day, for fear of the story ending too soon. Karnezis creates characters whose behavior is so surprising, yet believable, and whose personalities stay with me throughout the day. His descriptions of the convent inspired me to paint the setting.
Great story and very well written.
I read this book in two days. It is a very easy read but the story is very good. It held my interest right to the last page. It was the kind of book I hated to put down and couldn't wait to pick it up again. It is a story I will not forget for awhile.
Couldn't put this book down and I hated that it ended! I hope there will be a sequel what a gifted writer and storyteller
